Neighborhood guide · Fairfax County, Virginia
McLean
Northern Virginia’s estate country — where CIA directors and Fortune 500 executives live behind mature trees, ten minutes from Tysons.
The vibe
McLean is where Washington’s power class actually lives. Home to CIA headquarters — and, far more quietly, Mars, Inc. HQ — it’s a landscape of winding roads, stone walls, and estates set deep on wooded lots. There’s no real downtown to speak of; the social infrastructure is private clubs, top schools, and dinner parties. It’s discreet wealth, not display wealth — which is exactly the point.
Homes & prices
Single-family estates dominate: the median sits near $2.3M–$2.4M, with recent sales ranging from $1M to $27M and an average sale price around $3.1M. Townhomes median about $1.2M; condos run from the $200s for one-bedrooms to nearly $3M at the top. ZIP 22101 was among Northern Virginia’s top-appreciating zips in 2026 (+17% median), with 40% of buyers paying cash. New supply is coming in the form of Ritz-Carlton branded residences near Tysons (102 units from ~$1M, targeted for late 2028).
Who it’s for
McLean is for buyers at the top of the market who want privacy, land, and the region’s best schools — senior executives, diplomats, and families for whom the Langley pyramid is non-negotiable. If your budget starts with a 2 and you want Fairfax County, this is the conversation.
Getting around
The Silver Line’s McLean station reaches Metro Center in about 28 minutes — but it sits at the Tysons edge, and much of residential McLean is car-dependent. Driving to the National Mall takes roughly 17 minutes off-peak. Plan on driving; the trade-off is seclusion most close-in suburbs can’t offer.
Schools
Fairfax County Public Schools, at their absolute best:
- Langley High School — GreatSchools 10/10; Niche’s #2 best college-prep public high school in Virginia; average SAT 1370
- McLean High School — Niche grade A+; GreatSchools 9/10; average SAT 1370
The Langley pyramid (McLean + Great Falls) commands some of Northern Virginia’s highest home prices — school boundaries here are a direct input to value.
Life here
Tysons Galleria carries a McLean address — Neiman Marcus, Saks, Chanel, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Prada, plus dine-in cinema. Scott’s Run Nature Preserve offers trails and Potomac views; Turkey Run Park and Clemyjontri Park are nearby. Dining skews toward established favorites and private clubs rather than trendy openings — McLean entertains at home.
Where it is
Solomia’s take
McLean is a relationship market. The best properties trade quietly — pocket listings, builder relationships, attorneys who call before anything goes public. At these price points, the difference between a good agent and a connected one is measured in access, not negotiation tactics. If McLean is your target, my network is your advantage.

Market figures reflect data available October 2026 (UrbanTurf/Bright MLS; Movoto; RealtyTrac; Homes.com) and move with the market. Monthly medians swing on small samples. School ratings are point-in-time (GreatSchools, Niche) and change year to year — always verify assigned schools for a specific address with Fairfax County Public Schools.
