Takoma Park
Victorian streets, a producers-only farmers market, and the most personality per block in Montgomery County.
The vibe
Takoma Park has been marching to its own drummer since 1883 — founded as one of America’s first planned Victorian commuter suburbs around the B&O Railroad, incorporated in 1890, and proudly quirky ever since. It’s a declared nuclear-free zone, and in 2013 it became the first city in the United States to lower the voting age to 16 for municipal elections. The "Azalea City" is a Tree City USA with Victorian streetscapes, a fiercely local commercial strip, and a community identity nothing else in the DMV quite matches.
Homes & prices
The median near $742K (summer 2026, Redfin data) sells at 101% of list — this is a competitive little market. The stock is wonderfully varied: restored Victorians in the Historic District near Laurel Avenue, Cape Cods in Hillwood Manor, and condos near Sligo Creek Parkway from the low $200s. Single-family examples run roughly $645K–$690K.
Who it’s for
Takoma Park is for buyers who want character and community over square footage — progressives, artists, and families who’ll use the farmers market every Sunday and know their neighbors by name. It’s less for buyers who want new construction or big lots, and the school picture varies by address (see below).
Getting around
The Takoma station (Red Line) sits directly on the DC/Maryland border, serving the town — a genuine Metro-town advantage that many comparable suburbs can’t claim. Walk Score runs 67–73 depending on the block, strongest near the commercial core.
Schools
Montgomery County Public Schools — but assignments vary significantly by address, so verify carefully.
- Takoma Park Middle School — GreatSchools 9/10
- Piney Branch Elementary School — GreatSchools 8/10
- Montgomery Blair High School — Niche grade A+
Other feeders rate lower (Rolling Terrace Elementary, Silver Spring International Middle) — the school picture is genuinely address-dependent here. Always verify for a specific address.
Life here
The Takoma Park Farmers Market — Sundays on Laurel Avenue, producers-only, year-round — is the town’s weekly ritual. The Takoma Park-Silver Spring Food Co-Op is the member-owned natural foods anchor. Add Victorian streetscapes, the azalea gardens, and a calendar of proudly offbeat community events, and you get a town with more civic energy than suburbs three times its size.
Where it is
Solomia’s take
Takoma Park is a 101%-of-list market in a town that looks sleepy — do not mistake charm for softness. The Victorians near Laurel Avenue move fast, and the address-by-address school variation means the "same" town can be a different school story two streets over. I map the feeders before we tour, so there are no surprises after the offer.

Market figures reflect data available October 2026 (Redfin via AgentPronto) and move with the market. Median figures vary across sources ($693K–$817K). School ratings are point-in-time (GreatSchools; Niche) and change year to year — always verify assigned schools for a specific address with Montgomery County Public Schools.
